History

The rowing Palio honouring San Ranieri began in 1935 and recalls Pisa's maritime tradition and the exploits of the ancient Stefanian galleys.

The race follows the Luminara and brings the four historic districts to the Arno, each represented by its own frigate and colour.

The Race

The Race

Four boats race 1,500 metres upstream from Ponte della Cittadella to Scalo dei Renaioli. Each crew has eight rowers, one helmsman, and one climber.

At the finish, the climber ascends a rope to the top of a ten-metre mast to capture the blue palio.
